But a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised...

Just a few late night musings on Proverbs 31.

{Side-note: I've heard that this is an "overused" passage in Scripture. The dangers of that mentality is that we can - in apathy or pride - devalue a text that is meant to be used for our sanctification and point us to the Lord. It's good.}

In this passage, King Lemuel's mother gives him advice on the type of woman he ought to marry. It fascinates me that the only mention she gives of external beauty is that "Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing." Food for thought.

Women: Read and study this. Seek and pursue these attributes; not because they will win you a husband, but because they are God-honoring and right.

Men: Read and study this. Recognize and praise these attributes in women; desire a wife that looks like Jesus and fears God. That is beautiful.

A woman who fears the Lord is: humble, precious, trustworthy, diligent, wise, prayerful, loving, hard-working, strong, generous, compassionate, kind, light-hearted, joyful, a servant, faithful, dignified, a teacher, praise-worthy, trusts in the Lord, blessed, excellent, praised. The heart of her husband trust in her. She does him good all the days of her life (this includes her in her singleness- that's a whole different topic!) Above all, she's knows who God is and she fears, reveres, and honors Him. That is the making of a woman of God.
